Chapter 1 ยท Introduction

Welcome to Programming Basics

  • Lesson
  • 4 min

Every LOXONE project is built in one piece of software, and everything that follows in your training assumes you can find your way around it.

This module is that foundation. You will learn how LOXONE Config is laid out, how to commission a Miniserver, how rooms and categories shape what the customer sees, and how to build and test your first piece of logic. You will also see how Auto Configuration builds the basic program of a whole project for you.

Nothing here is difficult. It is simply the base for everything else, and time spent here makes every later module much easier.

By the end of this lesson you will be able to:

  • Plan your time for this course
  • Check that you have everything you need before you start
  • Explain how this course fits into the Foundation Training

The situation

You are about to open LOXONE Config, and likely for the first time.

The screen is full of panels, menus and icons, and none of it means anything yet. By the end of this course, all of it will, and you will have built and tested a working piece of logic of your own.

What you will be able to do

  • Find your way around LOXONE Config and its main areas
  • Create a project and commission a Miniserver
  • Set up rooms and categories so the app looks right and the automation behaves correctly
  • Connect inputs and outputs, and use function blocks
  • Build a working piece of logic and test it in simulation
  • Watch a program run on a real Miniserver with LiveView
  • Let Auto Configuration build the basic program, then check and complete it
  • See your project the way the customer does, in the LOXONE app

How modules work

Every course is made up of modules, and every module is made up of chapters and lessons. This module has ten lessons across three chapters, and takes around 90 minutes in total.

Getting Started covers LOXONE Config, commissioning a Miniserver, and setting up rooms.

How Programming Works covers inputs and outputs, function blocks, your first logic, and memory flags.

Testing, Tools and the App covers simulation and LiveView, Auto Configuration, and the LOXONE app the customer uses every day.

Each lesson takes between 7 and 11 minutes, and ends with a short task and a question so you can check what you have understood before moving on. You can work at your own pace and return to any lesson at any time.

Each module ends with a milestone

The Foundation Training is built around a project. You have a Demo Case on your desk and an apartment to commission. Every module ends by applying what you have learned to that project.

Programming Basics ends with your first milestone: creating your project, commissioning the Miniserver, and setting up every room from the floor plan. By the end of this course, your apartment project will be complete.

Information

You do not need hardware to start. Simulation runs a whole program on your PC, so you can build and test everything in How Programming Works without a Miniserver connected. You need a Miniserver or the Demo Case for LiveView and for the milestone.

What you need before you start

  • A Windows PC with administrator rights
  • LOXONE Config installed, downloaded for free from the LOXONE website
  • Basic knowledge of working with a PC
  • A Miniserver or a Democase, which you will need for the milestone at the end of each module

What comes next

Programming Basics is the starting point for the Foundation Training. Once you have completed it, the later modules assume you can navigate LOXONE Config and commission a Miniserver, so the lessons can concentrate on lighting, audio, climate and the rest.

Takeaway

This module is the foundation for everything that follows. Ten lessons take you from opening LOXONE Config for the first time to building, testing and auto configuring your own program, and the course ends by commissioning your project for real.

Apply What You've Learned

Task

Get set up before you begin

  1. Download and install LOXONE Config from the LOXONE website, if you have not already.
  2. Open it once and leave it open while you work through this course.
  3. Check that your Demo Case is unpacked and powered, ready for LiveView and the milestone.
