Chapter 1 · Intro

What is Tunable White?

  • Lesson
  • 4 min

Tunable White is often confused with dimming. Learners need to distinguish the colour of white light from how much light is present.

The situation

A home office is used for focused morning work and a quieter late-afternoon planning session. The client asks for two different white-light atmospheres.

Separate colour temperature from brightness

Tunable White is white light whose colour temperature can be adjusted by mixing warm-white and cool-white light. Loxone’s Smart Tunable White documentation describes those two white channels. Brightness is a separate question: the amount of light desired for the task.

For the morning work session, the brief might call for a cooler-feeling white appearance with enough brightness for documents. For the late-afternoon meeting, it might call for a warmer-feeling white appearance while retaining usable brightness at the table. Changing colour temperature alone does not answer the brightness question.

This two-axis description gives a project team better information than “make it warmer.” Exact light-source data, equipment selection, and programming remain matters for approved product and project documentation.

  1. Identify the colour-temperature request in each office moment.
  2. Identify the separate brightness requirement.
  3. Explain why “warmer and dimmer” describes two different changes.
Takeaway

Tunable White changes the warm-to-cool character of white light; brightness is a separate, task-based decision.
