Chapter 1 · Intro
Access, smartly considered
Access planning begins with who needs to enter, when they enter, and what should happen when the usual path does not apply.
The situation
A small office has employees, a cleaner after hours, and delivery visitors. The owner wants a simple access conversation.
Model access as people and moments
An access plan links a person or role to an entry moment and the permission needed for that moment. An exception is a situation—such as a lost credential or visitor arrival—that needs its own agreed response.
Employees may need weekday entry, the cleaner a defined after-hours moment, and visitors a host-confirmed arrival. The plan does not claim which credential technology will be used; it makes the policy question visible.
Separating roles avoids a common mistake: granting a single “building access” expectation to people whose responsibilities and hours differ.
- List the three roles in the scenario.
- Write one entry moment for each.
- Add one exception that the owner must decide.
