Chapter 1 · Introduction

Welcome to Your Project

  • Lesson
  • 10 min

This training is not a tour of LOXONE products. It is a project.

You have a Demo Case on your desk and an apartment to commission. Across the Foundation Training you will take it from an empty floor plan to a finished, working building. Every module you complete adds something to the same apartment.

By the end of this lesson you will be able to:

  • Describe the apartment you are going to commission
  • List what your customer wants in each part of it
  • Identify which module will help to deliver each requirement

The situation

A family is moving into a two bedroom apartment of about 86 m² . They have chosen LOXONE, and you are the partner delivering it.

They have told you what they want. None of it is phrased in products or components, because customers do not speak that way. Turning their wishes into a working building is the job, and it starts by understanding both.

How this training works

Each module in the Foundation Training teaches you a topic, and then ends with a milestone where you apply it to this apartment.

You learn lighting, then you light your building. You learn audio, then your building gets sound. By the final milestone, everything the customer asked for works.

It is one project, built across the whole training.

Your building

A two bedroom apartment of about 86 m², on one floor. The kitchen and living room open into each other, forming the main living space. A landing connects the entrance to the two bedrooms and the bathroom.

It is a small building. Everything you learn also applies to far larger projects, but a compact apartment lets you see the whole system at once.

What your customer wants

The family have told you what they would like. Read this the way you would read it in a real meeting: as wishes, not as specifications.

  1. Warm, comfortable lighting in the living room and bedrooms, and brighter neutral light in the kitchen and bathroom
  2. Lights that come on by themselves at night, dimmed so they do not dazzle
  3. One button by the bed that turns the whole apartment off at night
  4. One button at the entrance that turns everything off as they leave
  5. Music in the open kitchen and living area that plays as one, with the kitchen able to be turned down while cooking
  6. Music that follows them into the living room when they walk in
  7. An apartment they can run from their phone, that keeps working in a power cut
Information

Every item on that list maps to something you will learn. As you complete each module you will be able to tick more of it off. By the end, the whole list is done.

How your building grows

Each module ends with a milestone, where you apply what you have just learned to this apartment.

  1. Bring the building to life

Commission the Miniserver and set up the rooms from this plan in the Programming Basics module.
  2. Light the building

Place and program the lighting, and build the moods the family asked for in the Lighting module.
  3. Give it sound

Place and group the speakers, and make the living room respond to presence in the Audio module.
  4. And more

Through the remaining modules as the training grows: climate, shading, access, energy, planning and diagnostics.

Where things go

A starting point for your planning, which you will refine as you learn each topic.

Lighting. Warm dimmable light in the bedrooms and the living room, neutral in the kitchen and bathroom, and works with presence.

Audio. Speakers across the open kitchen and living area, grouped so they play as one, with the kitchen able to have its own volume. The bedroom is a quiet zone of its own.

What you need before you start

  1. Programming Basics completed, so you can create a project and commission a Miniserver
  2. Your Democase unpacked and powered
  3. The floor plan printed or open on a second screen

Takeaway

You can describe the apartment and the customer's wishes without looking them up, and you know where to find this brief again when a milestone asks for it.

Apply What You've Learned

Task

Before you start any course, spend a few minutes with the plan.

  1. Download the project brief and keep it beside you.
  2. Study the floor plan and the customer's wishes above.
  3. For three rooms of your choice, write down what the customer wants in that room and which course will deliver it.
  4. Note which rooms are open to each other and should be treated as one space.
